How to Have Difficult Conversations

The real benefits of managing performance to you and the business.

Can you afford not to?

Addressing issues with staff as they arise can be challenging, but remind yourself of the benefits to all, including the business.

You will:

  • Save money and time
  • Set an expectation that people need to perform to a high level
  • Keep a focus on results and improvement
  • Nip problems in the bud
  • Keep people motivated and encourages them to improve
  • Stop the risk of good people leaving
  • Reduce a lot of the stress of managing people
  • Reduce risk to the business

An added benefit is that countless employment tribunals for discrimination or unfair dismissal could have arguably been avoided if only the manager had dealt with difficulties early on.  Simply by discussing issues with the person involved, when they happen, can establish what is really going on and stop things escalating.

We designed and delivered a very successful one day workshop recently for 16 store managers from a local retailer.  The focus was helping the managers with a simple framework to successfully give feedback to staff members, combined with the red flags to watch out for in employment law and discrimination.

With the average cost of an employment tribunal costing anything from £4,000 just to defend a claim, can you really afford to ignore the power of a conversation?
