Management skills for team leaders

Case Study

Helping team leaders from a local production factory develop confidence and capability to carry out their role effectively

The situation & objectives

A local production factory wanted to improve consistency and efficiency in dealing with performance issues and conflict on the factory floor, and a need was identified to develop the management skills of team leaders. The main objective was to give them the confidence and capability to effectively execute their roles with a pro-active and consistent approach and therefore reducing the need to escalate issues to HR.

The production team leaders were key to the smooth operation of the factory but also worked various shift patterns. Therefore, an important part of the programme was to make sure that training was short and impactful, without disrupting production.

The objectives of the training were to ensure team leaders-

  • Understood the role of the production Team Leader - what was expected and required
  • Organised and ran team meetings in an effective and inspirational way
  • Communicated openly, honestly and empathically with team members in a way that encouraged and motivated them
  • Gave prompt and effective feedback to team members to ensure issues were dealt with and did not escalate
  • Resolved effectively day to day conflicts which arose on the floor without needing to involve senior managers or HR

Our solution-

After discussions with the client, we designed & delivered a series of practical interactive half day workshops at regular intervals over a 3 month period. Each workshop focused on a particular topic with the sequencing designed to progressively build capability. Exercises were based on real, relevant scenarios.

To accommodate shifts, there were three groups at different times to provide maximum flexibility and minimal time away from work. Participants were supplied with small A6 tip cards in a handy wallet to refer to back in the workplace.

Benefits of our approach

  • Learning that can be immediately applied to work with visible results
  • More co-operation and ownership of issues facing team leaders
  • Individual prompt cards to embed transfer of learning back to work
  • Learning with momentum over time with opportunities to practise in between workshops
  • Relevant debate, discussion and sharing of best practice between people at the same level
  • Development of a consistent approach to leadership within the business

Content of the half day workshops included-

  • The role of the Team Leader
  • Effective, positive communication
  • Listening and questioning skills
  • Running effective meetings
  • Giving effective feedback and having difficult conversations
  • Effectively handling conflict and disagreements

Outcome and results

100% of participants said they would recommend the training

100% of participants said they felt more confident in their roles as a result

The client has noticed many more positive behaviours on the factory floor

Fewer issues were being referred to HR

Several line managers said that the motivation of the team leaders had improved as a result of the company’s investment in developing their skills
